Canada is no stranger to the whiskey business. The country commonly known for hockey and general politeness is also a hotbed for some of the highest quality whiskey in the world. In fact, at one point Canadian whiskey was regarded as the most popular whiskey in the United States, only diminishing as a result of other countries’ rise to industry prominence.
Still, Canadian whiskey brands continue to stand as some of the best on the market. Here are a few of the country’s most notable names.
JP Wiser’s 18 Year Old
Crafted as a traditional lighter whiskey, JP Wiser’s 18 Year Old Canadian Whiskey takes on a light woody taste as it rests in used Canadian whiskey barrels. Each bottle sports a light citrus flavor paired “with a hint of earth, smoke, freshly cut wood, and rye on the nose,” providing a truly unique flavor that is equal parts earthy and sweet. If that is not enough, the whiskey can also be purchased for a reasonable price.
Forty Creek Barrel Select
Canadians occasionally refer to their whiskey as “rye,” also rye is actually just a whiskey flavoring component. Forty Creek’s Barrel Select is at no shortage of rye, blending three different grains to create its flavor. It is said to be a “great sipping whiskey” and is perfect for a variety of mixture pairings.
Collingwood 21 Year Old Rye
Collingwood 21 Year Old is known for two things: its bold flavor and its even bolder low price. This aged-for-two-decades old rye can normally be purchased for under $60, providing a sweet, tangy experience that is as affordable as it is satisfying.
Stalk and Barrel Single Malt
Distilled in the first Ontario microdistillery, Stalk and Barrel Single Malt is one of only two single malt whiskeys available for purchase in Canada. It is said to be made with 100 percent malted barley, a big component to its prominent taste.
Gibson’s Finest Rare
Gibson is commonly regarded as one of the most respected names in the Canadian whiskey business, and its Finest Rare is a testament to its products’ quality. The whiskey boasts a strong lacing of flavors comprised of “sweet, spicy oak and pine sawdust, rich in toffee, vanilla, and hot spicy pepper. Biscuits, with typical rye dustiness, spice, fruit, and just a drop of pickle juice.” You will likely not find another whiskey brand like this one anywhere else.
